Heritage Society of Essex and Middle River, Inc.
The Heritage Society of Essex and Middle River, Inc. is a non-profit organization staffed by volunteers whose goal is the preservation of the history of Essex and Middle River, Maryland. The Heritage Society was founded on Sept. 26, 1968, and the Museum opened exactly seven years later on Sept. 26, 1975. The Museum is housed in the 1920 Fire and Police station, which also served as the Essex courthouse. The original jail cells are great for a photo opp! The Museum features two levels of exhibits and displays local to our community and of interest to all. You’ll find Police and Fire memorabilia, the Avenue of Shops, Veterans’ room, sports memorabilia and our most famous artifact – the Moaning Statue! We host many events throughout the year, including our Museum Speaker Series, Community Tree Lighting, First Responders’ Appreciation Day and private paranormal investigations.
