Founded in 1929, the Natural History Society of Maryland is an inclusive hub for scientific research and discovery, a proving ground for the next generation of naturalists, and a playground for all who are driven by curiosity. We house the largest interdisciplinary natural history collections in Maryland that tell the 4.6 billion-year history of Maryland, and have served as the de facto state natural history museum for Maryland for nearly 100 years. In addition to the collections and museum, the Natural History Society of Maryland has a suite of programs for young and old, and for those whose passion is nature and are passionate about nature. There is something for everyone – workshops, speaker series, field trips, festivals, classes, and demonstrations. For those who have a specific interest, we are home to four clubs which meet monthly: Lepidoptera Club (moths/butterflies), Herp Club (amphibians/reptiles), Fossil Club, and Archaeology Club. Watch for our museum grand reopening in early 2026 to celebrate the completion of a major building renovation. Our building is temporarily closed until then. Learn more about what we do and view our activity calendar on our website, listed below.
