BLACK SOX SCULPTURE PROJECT
Project Introduction + Artist Information Session
Wednesday, November 12th, 2025 | 6 – 8pm
On behalf of Parks & People and South Baltimore Gateway Partnership (SBGP), Maryland Art Place (MAP) is offering an exciting opportunity to Baltimore regional artists (MD, DC, PA, DE, VA) working in large-scale sculpture to create artworks of historical Baltimore Black Sox baseball players. The sculptures will be placed within a larger $30 million public park on the Middle Branch of the Patapsco River in the Westport neighborhood.
Join us at MAP Wednesday, November 12th from 6 – 8pm to meet BSSP partners, Assedo Consulting and Field Operations. Community Engagement is an important part of this project. Assedo Consulting will share details about this exciting project as well as discuss the importance of Black Sox community and the families who carry their legacies forward. Field Operations will provide an overview of the Westport Waterfront Park and Memorial location, followed by an overview of the RFP and a Q&A.
Figurative Work: The Baltimore Black Sox Sculpture Project (BSSP) emphasizes the need for lifelike, figurative sculptures that authentically represent Black individuals in public art—addressing a historic imbalance where such representation has been largely reserved for white figures in the U.S.
WHO IS QUALIFIED TO APPLY? Artist actively working in Maryland, Virginia, DC, Pennsylvania and Delaware with experience in producing large-scale, public art sculptures.
This RFP is part of a two-stage selection process. Applying artists should submit:
One paragraph of interest
One paragraph bio
CV or resume
10 images of past work examples.
Artists must have experience working with large-scale public art. Shortlisted artists will be invited to make a full application to include sketches or mock-ups. $500 honorariums will be provided for this work. Selected artists should anticipate working together as the project develops. Artist teams are eligible to apply in addition to individual artists.
Out of Town? The event can be attended physically and virtually.
Parking/Location: MAP is located at 218 West Saratoga Street between Park & Howard Streets. There is free on-street parking after 6pm and an Air Garage across the street. MAP can be easily identified by the illuminated Cheon/Kroiz diamonds on the facade of its building.
