Despite the death of monarchy in America in 1776, independent Americans did not immediately scrap notions of personal allegiance to an executive figure. Upon George Washington’s death, they deified his memory, creating a bond of allegiance that finally allowed them to turn the presidency into an office under the law rather than an object of personal devotion. MCHC’s Lord Baltimore fellow Tyson Reeder, PhD, will take us through this intricate time in the early history of the United States.
