Sweren Wogan Book Arts Program
Athenaeum, Goucher College
Join the Marcie Sweren Wogan Institute for the Study of the Book for an afternoon and evening celebrating book arts, collecting, and creative practice. The program includes a hands-on workshop, a book collecting prize ceremony, and a visiting artist lecture.
3:00–5:00 PM — Book Arts Workshop: “Fun with Japanese Stab Binding Techniques”
Makerspace, Athenaeum
In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn the fundamentals of Japanese stab binding. Using tools and materials such as a Japanese push drill, book board, and library cloth, students will create a small bound booklet that can serve as a model for future book and paper-based projects. No prior experience with book arts is required.
5:30–6:30 PM — Sweren Wogan Book Collecting Prize Ceremony
Batza Room, Athenaeum
Celebrate student book collecting at the annual Sweren Wogan Book Collecting Prize Ceremony. This award recognizes Goucher students who demonstrate creativity, curiosity, and commitment in building a personal book collection.
6:30–7:30 PM — Visiting Book Artist Lecture: Sanzi Kermes
Batza Room, Athenaeum
Multimedia artist Sanzi Kermes will discuss how book arts intersect with her broader artistic practice. Her work explores narrative, material experimentation, and the expanded possibilities of the book as both object and artistic medium.
